News » That\'s when a loss of vision can be said to be due to retinal edema
The retinal edema is manifested as a result of an improper fluid accumulation in the retina.
When it is not involved throughout the retina, we must make a distinction between macular edema, which always causes a decrease in proportion of view and based on the gravity of the edema same, and peripheral edema, which may give rise to particular symptoms or cause phenomena of phosphenes or floaters.
Retinal macular edema: how is it done?
Although in some cases the macular retinal edema can occur as side effects of surgery, in many cases, it is a complication of diseases such as diabetic retinopathy or vascular occlusions etiniche.
• diabetic macular retinal edema (DME): this is the most serious complication associated with diabetic retinopathy, this eye condition that often tends to develop over the years in people with diabetes mellitus. The DME is due to the accumulation of liquids in the macula (ie the most central part of the retina) that alters the structure and the functionality of the macula itself, which generates, therefore a very important visual damage. Until recently, laser treatment has for years represented the only available treatment for DME.
Today, however, there are new treatments that allow you to control macular edema with intravitreal implant of cortisone drugs slow release. To date, unfortunately, there is no treatment able to defeat definitively this eye condition.
Ben is therefore comprises as plays, therefore, particularly important prevention, especially in diabetic patients. Such prevention must be exercised with scrupulous controls the blood glucose, hypertension, all\'iperplidemia and, in general, in all those of blood risk factors, in order to avoid or delay as much as possible the onset of those possible serious complications caused by diabetes to the eyes.
• inflammatory macular retinal edema: issue of a disease of the macula which, for many causes, can generate an inflammatory condition which involves the release of pro-inflammatory substances. The latter, produce impermeability of retinal capillaries resulting in leakage of fluids. The main symptoms are represented by haze and visual decline, in particular in the central vision.
You can rarely be associated floaters or photopsias to these symptoms.
Even this disorder, unfortunately, is a frequent cause of permanent visual decrease, especially in older people.
• Irvine-Gass syndrome results in decreased vision. It occurs, in general, after a surgery of cataract, with causes to be put in relation with the alteration of the blood-retinal barrier, which creates exudation of liquid that goes to accumulate within the layers of the macula. A different theory calls into question the vitreous changes, always following the surgery. The most effective therapy, is, in any case, that which is based on the administration of indomethacin.
Peripheral edema Retinal
The retinal peripheral edema - also known as edema of Berlin - is the consequence of a non-penetrating trauma to the front of the eye.
In the presence of this pathology manifests the eye a greyish white appearance of the retinal tissue due to the lack of oxygen that determines a malfunction of the whole retinal area involved. In particular, in this case, the retinal photoreceptors tend to lose their functionality or provide answers altered as flashes of light.
The treatment of this disease consists in the administration of steroidal drugs via systematic.
As always, prevention is a valuable aid to avert possible damage associated retinal edema, or, at least, to avoid that they become serious.
